it's finally becoming cold here in SF, so i'm pulling out the winter gear .Once more it's "plaid time".Today's post ,will feature one of my favorite from the vault: an early buffalo plaid 40's Hirsch/Weis hunting coat .This beauty has fully caped shoulders, a sports collar that once buttoned covers half of the face.But ,what i like the most, is its quite uncommon brown and black color.

The Portland company that became White Stag,originated as a business that specialized in sails for ships: The Willamette Tent and Awning Company.

The company was established in 1883 by Henry Wemme he sold it to brothers Max S. and Leopold B. Hirsch in 1907. Harry Weis ,brother of Wemme's former secretary was asked by the brothers to stay in the company. Appreciative of Weis's knowledge about canvas products, the Hirsch entrepreneurs asked him to become a partner, and soon the company was known as the Hirsch-Weis Manufacturing Company. As commercial sailing ships became obsolete, the partners expanded to make durable clothing and supplies for outdoor workers such as loggers, mill hands, and stockmen.

In 1929, Harold S. Hirsch, son of the founder and a member of the Dartmouth ski team, was granted permission from his father to develop a new line of clothing designed exclusively for skiers.In a corner of the Hirsch-Weis factory, he began work on a ski suit, which he marketed in 1931 as "White Stag," He adopted the name White-Stag after an inverted English translation of the original company name, Weiss meaning white in German and Hirsch meaning a male deer.an English translation of the German words, "Hirsch" and "Weis."

Skiing in Oregon was on the rise in the 1930s, and the White Stag brand quickly gained a reputation, especially in western states. After World War II, the sport skyrocketed in popularity and, with it, White Stag ski clothing. As the sportswear division of Hirsch-Weis Manufacturing Company overcame the popularity of the company itself, officials changed its name to White Stag in 1956. By 1966, White Stag was a public company, and owners of the controlling stock - primarily the Hirsch family and other relatives - merged it with a conglomerate called Warner Brothers, a nationwide apparel and textile firm that later changed its name to Warnaco who sold the trademark to Wal-Mart in 2003.

Got these from a guy who was parting with his 20 years collection .They are probably early 20th C and qualify for what is called :" the plains Indian's style".Made of buckskin,they're decorated with early glass beads in a very simple fashion, as opposed to the usual very intricate work seen on earlier models .It's probably why i've got a good deal on them.It's a good size too,so i might give they a try .......

Here's the new addition to the vault .This USN seabees souvenir shirt/jacket has all the features usually seen on post war Japanese made jackets.the cut,with it's pointy collar and "ike" like cut is typical of the period .although in really rough condition,because of the embroidery's quality but most of all because of the subject matter, i had to have it ......

today i've decided to stop and take time to take pictures of my favorite San Francisco mural .it was quite a challenge because the actual mural is now on private property and on a very busy street that rarely sees pedestrians because of traffic.the mural was executed in 1936 by Don Clever and restored in 1999 for our enjoyment........

Don was a self taught Canadian born artist who moved in the US in 1920 .he settled in SF where he spent most of his life ......Don Clever died in 2001

Today's post will feature one of my favorite illustrator the great Alex Gard and his USN trilogy . From "sailors in boots", "getting salty" to "sick bay" Gard illustrated the journal of a young graduate of the Russian Naval Academy who joined the U.S. Navy as it prepared to enter the war in Europe. It starts: To all the men who went through the boots training, Especially to Platoon 512, of 1942 Norfolk training station. The illustrations are just perfect.

Alex Gard was born in Russia in 1900 .During World War I, Gard worked on a Russian destroyer where he was constantly drawing caricatures of everyone on board.He then left for France after the Bolshevik Revolution, drawing cartoons for the French newspaper Le Matin in the 1920s. Moving again, this time to the US, he was hired to create caricatures of Broadway and other celebrities at Sardi's Restaurant in New York City. Vincent Sardi,the owner, and Gard had a contract that stated that Gard would make patron's caricatures in exchange for one meal a day at the restaurant. Altogether, he drew over 700.The first official caricature by Gard was of Ted Healy, the vaudevillian of Three Stooges fame. When Sardi’s son, Vincent Sardi, Jr. took over restaurant operations in 1947, he offered to change the terms of Gard's agreement. Gard refused, and continued to draw the caricatures in exchange for meals until his death.

Gard died in 1948 in NY.

Today's post will focus on one of the most popular jacket on the auction blog nowadays :The US NAVY N1 deck jacket.

Even if the last of the blue deck jacket the M43 model can be considered, by some ,as the first N1 as it was the blueprint of the iconic jacket,the real N1 [green] saw it's first production in the first month of 1944 and saw action during D DAY along the coasts of Normandy.For a very brief period it was manufactured retaining all the details featured on the blue M43 :alpaca lining to the end of the cuffs, extra stitching on the sleeves and additional loops on the inside at the waist and underarms .These details disappeared fast,perhaps for material conservation,making this first N1 quite rare and for D DAY USN collectors a must have in any condition. Pictures above ,also show one of the last N1 manufactured in the 60's,before the jacket was replaced by the A2 deck jacket.....

These shirts have been marked by hand with water based inks.No use of machines here, just good ol' artisan methods of manufacturing . No shirts are the same on purpose .The resulting impressions will continue to fade with time eventually leaving only the permanently stained cotton fibers and having no tactile effect remaining.

I've searched for the closest and most affordable"vintage cut" in MEN's t-shirt, to use for my reproductions. These shirts have a vintage style slim fit with a narrow 5/8" neck, shorter sleeves and short length. They are 100% cotton. sizing listed below

When the United States entered the Great War there was a critical shortage of wool uniforms and overcoats, brought about by the rapid expansion of America’s army. Because of this army Quartermasters scoured the warehouses across the nation in search of warm suitable military clothing.Privately purchased clothing and equipment for the officers and soldiers became big business during the war and many American retailers jumped on the band wagon anxious to profit from the military men.

U.S. government reacted and asked the American people to devote their spare time to knitting wool garments such as :socks, sweaters, mufflers among many other garments for the men overseas and be a part of the war effort

In the summer of 1917 the American Red Cross went into the knitting business and launched a massive campaign on the home front. The Red Cross and other relief organizations put out an urgent request for knitted goods of all kinds . It needed a minimum of one and a half million each of knitted wristlets, mufflers, sweaters and other warm garments , but the most urgently needed item was wool socks. It began by teaching thousands of men, women and children how to knit; its supply bureau purchased one million pounds of wool and printed detailed instruction booklets and patterns that had been approved by the War Department’s Clothing and Equipage Division. The Red Cross along with other relief and charitable organizations such as the Knights of Columbus and the Jewish Welfare League organized knitters all across the nation to “Knit for Sammy”.......

PTRon 29, assigned to the Mediterranean, based at Calvi, Corsica, and Leghorn, Italy, and had action along the northwest coast of Italy and southern coast of France, operating under the British Coastal Forces

This photo of PT-557 was taken on the Hudson River heading up to Detroit after the war had ended. Volunteers took the PT-Boats to Detroit for display for 2 weeks, then they were brought back through the locks and ended up at the Brooklyn Navy yard. On the way back they were ordered to go slower as ,when they went up the Hudson at speed their wakes swamped and damaged several docks along the shore. I suppose 7 PT Boats doing 40 knots could do that......

Needless to say ,i'm glad that still have this beauty in my collection.As we all know it'll cost me a kidney nowadays.Love the use of the inside and out of the hide to achieve the two tone effect .All the common and desirable details are present but the unusual DOT zipper tops them all.Was this a Scovill early attempt to enter the zippers competition under its DOT brand !??i haven't research this so far .So if anyone knows, feel free to post ........

McLEAN TEXAS WW2 AFRIKA KORPS POW CAMP

Today riveted special will feature a rare find 3 rare WW2 POW winter shirts.

McLEAN a Texas panhandle town,started as nothing more than a cattle loading site along the Rock Island Railroad when in 1901 a water well was dug and a switch and section house was built. But among the railroaders, a large rancher had a vision. Alfred Row, an Englishman.He saw greater opportunity for the area and donated land near the switching station to lay out a town site.

He name the town for W.P. McLean of the Texas Legislature and Railroad Commission, the town quickly grew, gaining a post office by 1902. Just one year later the town was incorporated and boasted two banks, two livery stables, two wagon yards, two cafes, a post office, a lumber yard, newspaper called the McLean News, and a furniture store.

In 1912, Alfred Rowe, the town’s founder, left McLean to visit his native England. Tragically, he would never see McLean again as, upon his return to the United States, he met his death on the Titanic when the grand ship sank in the Atlantic in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912. Legend has it that rescuers found him hugging his briefcase, frozen to death atop an ice floe, with his gold watch still ticking.

In 1927 the town profited from the oil boom, becoming a major shipping point for area livestock, gas, and oil. And, in the very same year, the Mother Road arrived in McLean, further insuring the town’s growth for the next several decades. During the Golden Age of Route 66, McLean boasted 16 service stations, six motels and numerous cafes. Oklahoma based Phillips Petroleum Company built its first Texas service station in McLean in 1927. By 1940 McLean had six churches, a newspaper, fifty-nine businesses, and a population of more than 1,500.

In September of 1942, an area northeast of McLean was chosen to serve as the McLean Permanent Alien Internment Camp during WWII. During its operation, the camp boasted twenty to thirty buildings and housed 3,000 prisoners-of-war. The first prisoners were German troops captured in North Africa from the famous Rommel's AFRIKA KORPS, who arrived in early 1943. A second group of Germans captured in their Homeland were also retained at the camp. During its time, there were several escape attempts from the camp, but on the bare plains of the Texas panhandle there was nowhere to go. All were recaptured and seemed glad to return to the prison. The camp continued to operate until July 1, 1945.

Today's post will keep up with the "Navy obsession" featuring an original mid 60's US NAVY sweatshirt with a NASA connection

USS Wasp (CVS-18) was the ninth US Navy ship to bear the wasp name. the carrier commissioned in 1943 was to be named originally :Oriskany,but, while still under construction,was renamed Wasp to honor the previous Wasp (CV-7), sunk in September 1942. the new Wasp served in several campaigns in the Pacific, earning eight battle stars. she was decommissioned shortly after the end of the war, but was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), and then eventually became an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). the Wasp played a prominent role in the space program, serving as the recovery ship for GEMINI missions. the ship participated in the Gemini XII recovery operation from 5 November to 18 November 1966. It was the 10th and final manned Gemini flight, the 18th manned American flight and the 26th spaceflight of all time.The recovery took place on 15th of November when the space capsule splashdown occurred within 3 mi (5 km) of Wasp. Captain James A. Lovell and Major Edwin E."buzz" Aldrin were lifted by helicopter hoist to the deck of Wasp and there enjoyed two days of celebration.

She was retired in 1972 and sold for scrap in 1973.

Today's post will showcase what's probably the oldest sweater in the RIVETED archives.... so far .This 1910's Princeton Spalding Bros.football sweater still has its early tag .This particular one was used up to the early 1920's.

Albert Goodwill Spalding was a renowned Boston Red Stockings pitcher [Cubs] when he retired from the game,then he persuaded his younger brother Walter to manufacture sporting goods.. A.G. Spalding and his brother opened their business in 1876 ,with an $800 loan from their mother. Spalding got its start by manufacturing baseballs gloves,but the big break came when he paid the National League to use his balls, so that he might advertise them as the "offical" league ball. Soon, his company was making golf clubs, football ,tennis rackets, basketballs, and anything else remotely connected to sport. .The brothers opened A. G. Spalding & Bros., the Chicago sporting goods store that would grow into a chain over the next 25 years.1887 was the year the company manufactured the first American football. In 1899, the company allowed other retailers to order directly from the their catalog. The new policy mandated quality, fixed retail prices, a fair profit to retailers, and consumer satisfaction. By 1901, the chain had grown from three to 14 stores. "Quality First" became the organization's slogan.....

So here's another "recreation" from the riveted studio.This 40's stenciled sweatshirt, pays tribute to the US.Navy men who fought during the operation dragoon in the south of France....

PT 209:

On August 14th, the eve of the invasion of Southern France AKA operation dragoon,PT 209 was out on his first combat mission in several weeks in the Mediterranean . PT 209's role, along with several other Ron 15 boats, was to help guide the first troops in the invasion to their designated assault areas.

Thousands of airborne and seaborne troops were to land ahead of the main invasion to secure important locations including coastal batteries that could threaten the main assault force. PT 209's role was to act as a beacon, sliding into enemy territory and, at a predetermined fixed point, guide those first troops through the darkness.

Operation Dragoon was the Allied invasion of southern France on August 15, 1944.It came in the later stages of the war and was overshadowed by the earlier and larger Operation Overlord that summer.The original plan was to invade on June 6th, 1944 while the troops were storming the beaches at Normandy but the plan wasn't meant to be for a single reason: there just weren't enough landing craft to get soldiers where they needed to be. Operation Overlord went off by itself, and southern operations were confined to Italy. Two months later, the men and materiel had been gathered for an assault. my grand father ,as a soldier in the first French army ,took part in the operation.

The invasion started with a parachute drop of the 1st Airborne Task Force, followed by the amphibious assault by elements of the U.S. Seventh Army and by a force made up primarily of the French First Army. The landing caused the German to abandon southern France and to retreat under constant Allied attacks to the Vosges Mountains. Despite being a large and complex military operation with a well-executed amphibious and airborne component, Operation Dragoon ,perhaps because of its lesser number of casualties ,remains overshadowed by the Normandy invasion......

RODEO KING .....RALPH DOUBLEDAY

In the early years of rodeo,Ralph Doubleday changed the way rodeos were photographed. When rider Gus Nylen was bucked off his horse, Doubleday took a picture of him in midair, becoming the first person ever to capture such an image."action picture " was born.

Doubleday was fearless in his pursuit of the dramatic shot,by being right there in the arena standing there,hopping to shoot the shot

While many of his images were sold to magazines and the press, Doubleday's primary and substantial income came from photographic postcards .After 1907, when Congress legalized the mailing of divided-back postcards with the message on the left and the address on the right, the production of photographic postcards grew into a substantial business.A national craze for postcards made the first decades of the twentieth century.It was the golden age of picture postcards.Americans were then mailing nearly a billion postcards annually .Entrepreneurs, such as Doubleday, found a niche in this business. Besides drugstores and souvenir shops, 200 Woolworth stores carried the Doubleday line at one time. It is estimated he sold over 30 million postcards.

i've chosen one of the most iconic and reproduced USN squadron's mascot : felix the cat of the famous VF-3 .

The VF-3 is the second oldest fighter squadron operating in the U.S Navy and is known today as Fighter Squadron Thirty One.VF-3 has a rich history and we can trace It’s beginnings in July, 1935. During WW2 VF-3 served aboard the carrier USS Lexington until its sinking during the Battle of the Coral Sea .It was then assigned to the USS Yorktown until the Battle of Midway. After Midway, the squadron served in several other posts, including the USS Enterprise until the end of the war. After the battle of Midway, VF-3 and VF-6 [who was also using the same mascot] swapped designations on July 1943, resulting in a three year controversy as to which squadron owned the "Felix" name and emblem it was until VF-3 was re-designated VF-3A on November 15th 1946 and awarded the official approval to adopt Felix the Cat by the Chief of Naval Operations. VF-3A was then re-designated VF-31 on August 7th, 1948. The Chief of Naval Operations approved the official adoption of the "Felix the Cat" name and call-sign by VF-3A. On August 7th 1948, VF-3A became today's VF-31 aka the Tomcatters.....

This vintage 40's single v shirt has been marked by hand using an antique Naval stencil [front] that was originally intended for duffel or sea bags. Please note there was no use of screen printing or any other commercial garment printing method in the manufacturing of this shirt. it was made using authentic military materials and techniques only. The resulting impression will continue to fade with time eventually leaving only the permanently stained cotton fibers and having no tactile effect remaining.check this out ....HERE

BROWNSTEIN, DANIEL was a california born Wholesale Merchant and Manufacturer

Mr. Brownstein spent his early youth in the north of California around Red Bluff , then when the family moved to San Francisco and entered the Boys’ High School, where he was graduated in 1887.

Shortly after finishing his studies Mr. Brownstein moved and settled permanently in Los Angeles in the latter part of the year 1887.There he was offered a position in the wholesale house of the Jacoby Brothers, pioneer clothiers in Los Angeles, and remained with that firm for eight years......

With the retirement of the Jacoby Brothers from the wholesale business, Brownstein was determined to take over and then created the firm of :Brownstein, Newmark and Louis.His partners in the venture being Henry W. Louis and P. A. Newmark. The three men were former wholesale clothiers combining their efforts to make the enterprise a success.

Business started in the old Baker Block in LA with one room and a basement as a store. The firm expanded until it required three stores and basements to house its stock. Brownstein’s company added manufacturing to their business around1899.Then, in 1905, the company moved to a new four-story location the department now employing about four hundred people. The company built another plant in 1912 providing employment to a thousand workers.

On Jan.1911. P. A. Newmark,partner of 15 years, withdrew from the firm, selling his share to Mr. Brownstein and his partner Louis. The business was then incorporated under the style, Brownstein-Louis Company.

Brownstein was member of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Chamber of Oils and Mines,chairman of the Committee on Mercantile and also a prominent member of the Los Angeles Merchants and Manufacturers’ Association.

Mr. Brownstein was one of the leading Masons on the Pacific Coast and was a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. He was also a member of the Mystic Shriners and of the Native Sons of the Golden West......interesting and intriguing past to say the least

It'll be hard to accurately date this latest find,but some details mad me think it should be early 30's.This jacket is a rare surviving example of what was outdoors clothing "back in the days".a closer examination reveals that the rubber coating of the canvas was hand applied ,probably with a large brush ......

The first Golden Books were published in 1942 by Simon and Schuster in cooperation with the Artist and Writers Guild.

Initially, twelve different, 24-page, books were published. While the cover art varied, all the books were the same small size, hardbound, with like binding, and priced at 25¢. Golden Books history stretches over 60 years and over two billion Little Golden Books printed!

The success of the first Little Golden Books paved the way for others.In 1941, children’s books normally sold for two or three dollars, which made them a luxury for many families. Little Golden Books were created as an affordable alternative but it also spawned a new market for animation storyboarders, layout artists, animators, color stylists and others to express themselves creatively while earning some money on the side.The list of authors and illustrators involved in Golden Books is impressive and includes myriad of Disney artists too. In 1958, Simon and Schuster sold its interest in Little Golden Books to Western.

Ownership and control of the series has changed several times since. In 2001, Random House acquired Golden Books for about 85 million dollars.

Guyot Suspenders.—A few hundred years ago, the methods of keeping a man's trousers in place were exceedingly vexatious. Strings were attached to the coat, and similar ones to the tops of the breeches, and then tied together to unite the most important parts of man's attire. Aristocrats wore ribbons in place of strings.....

—It might be interesting to know that the genius who invented the only ever famous Suspenders was Charles Guyot, of Paris, France back in 1848. Guyot obtained patents covering his brace all over the world and also registered the trademarks of "Guyot" and "Bretelles Hygieniques" everywhere. The neatness, strength and durability of the webbing and the unvarying quality were characteristics which at that early date were not to be found everywhere and gave the suspender its first start. Another peculiar thing about the Guyot is that its manufacture has been in the hands of the same family for years. The assembly of the Guyot was done by hand in French homes from the materials made at the central plant. Between one-third and one-half of the total Guyot output was sold in America. This brace won for the manufacturers the gold medal at the Paris exposition and the Grand Prix at the St. Louis exposition.

GUYOT certainly deserves the greatest thanks from the entire masculine world, as he was the first to make a joint Suspender combining comfort and health and insuring to the wearer free and easy motion.....

The Guyot Suspenders are justly celebrated today July the 4th with this stunning "red with and blue example". Every part is in perfect condition,the Webbing being tight, the Slides and Buckles patented, and the Button-Holes without tears,—being closed by the loom, another patent of Charles Guyot.

They were known the world over as "Bretelles Hygieniques", and were available in every city in every country for 60 cents an hefty price as its competition and imitators sold their braces for an average 15 cents.....

Boys will be boys .....

During the mid 60's,on both sides of the Atlantic ,boys were fed with Hollywood cowboy and war movies and all the merchandising coming along.It's a given that ,more or less at some point in time ,we've all read or seen the same comics,movies or TV shows .Who said globalisation was a new concept!???

Dell Comics was the comic book publishing side of Dell Publishing, which started via pulp magazines. The company published comics from 1929 up to 1973. At its peak being the most successful American company selling 26 million copies each month in the 50's.The 60's saw increased competition for the company .Dell Comics continued for another 11 years with licensed television and motion picture adaptations including: Mission Impossible, Ben Casey and Combat among the few long lasting series from this time. Combat had 40 issues and was my favorite. Toward the end Dell tried to publish some lame superhero titles and their version of trio the Universal Pictures monsters Frankenstein, Dracula and Werewolf .these are so ridiculous that they're a must have.....

Dell Comics finally ceased publication in 1973, with a few of its former titles moving to Gold Key Comics.

KELLOG'S WW2 AAF SQUADRONS PEP PINS

Here are some of my latest finds .I can't help buying them whenever i can get my hands on one.....

During ww2 the Kellogg's company, as part of the home front war effort and patriotic moral booster ,decided to insert a "prize" in the form of pinback buttons into each box of Pep cereal. Pep pins ,as the became known,have included U.S. Army squadrons as well as characters from newspaper comics. There were 5 series of comic characters and 18 different buttons in each set, with a total of 90 in the collection. Mint condition Pep pins, as with prizes from many cereal brands, have become sought-after collectables.The Kellogg's company placed 36 small pinback buttons each featuring a WWII squadron insignia in boxes of their Pep cereal.These were litho pins and easily damaged as they were printed directly onto the pin blank with no protective covering. They scratch very easily and rust even faster.....

ALL ABOUT THE US NAVY DENIM JUMPER

10/15 years ago,way before the sudden interest created by the "NAVY-ISM" craze and some designer newbies ,not much was to be found about his peculiar and iconic piece of garment .to tell you the truth ,not many denim collectors cared about it as they were plentiful.Over the years, i've heard and read so many uniformed opinions about the dating of such a jacket,even in Japanese magazines ,that i've decided to put together this post in an attempt to showcase all the elements that'll allow the reader to understand its evolution and function in the US NAVY .
The blue denim uniform, dungarees, is the Bluejacket's [NAVY's bible]working uniform. In 1901 regulations authorized the first use of denim jumpers and trousers, and the 1913 regulations permitted the dungaree outfit to be used by both officers and enlisted with the prescribed hat of the day. Officer's engaged in aviation introduced the khaki uniform and eventually it was the accepted working uniform for officers. Chief Petty Officers were in time allowed to don the khaki work uniform.

So let's start from the earliest clues found ....... from the pages of the NAVY'S bible :the 1917 blue jacket .This ww1 picture shows one of the very first denim jumper aka dungarees .It was a pull over one ,with 2 lower pockets .it is clearly the forerunner of the more common ww2 "open front"one.....it was not worn with a chambray shirt underneath as they were not part of the enlisted men's uniform then.

this shot, taken around 1918 in Florida ,shows a USN work party wearing the newly created "open front" jumper with removable brass buttons.It's a clear evolution from its forerunner ,allowing its wearer to take it off faster and making the dungarees more comfortable.Some of the earlier pull over example also present .......

Between the 2 wars there's a certain lack of information,but this article from the 1941 US NAVY uniform regulations book ,tells a lot about the rules applied to denim work blues

Early removable buttons,up to pre ww2,were made of black painted brass.....

For restrictions reasons surrounding the war effort,here is the second type ,a celluloid version.It appeared early during the war.....

This the 3rd type a non removable button ,same as the one used on the denim fly . This type was used at the end of WW2 up to the end of the Korean conflict and exhaustion of the produced stocks ......

So, many times i've been asked what are the side eyelets for !? NO it's not to adjust the waist size but to accomodate the clothes stops... A clothes stop is a small diameter cord about 12 inches long with metal ends to keep the cord from fraying. This short cord was used to tie laundry to a clothes line or other convenient object for drying. Every recruit was issued a length of clothes stops in boot camp instead of clothes pins. They ceased to be issued in the late 70's.Such eyelets can also be found on early wool pants and whites....

On this memorial day week end, i just wanted to pay tribute to one of my personal heroes who died on May 25th 1954 : the great Robert Capa........

Capa, Robert 1913-54, American war photographer was born in Hungary as Andre Friedmann. He came to Paris in 1933 and from that time on recorded with profound concern the spectacle of humanity caught in war .Capa began his career in the 1930's as a small time photographer. He would find himself in the middle of key historic events. From 1936 to 1939, he was all over Spain photographing the horrors the Spanish Civil War, taking the famous photograph of a Loyalist [supposedly]at the instant of death. World War II would bring Capa all around the world photographing on behalf of LIFE magazine.

His most famous work was done on June 6th, 1944 (D-Day Normandy Invasion) where he swam up on the beaches like all the other soldiers that day, but instead of being armed with a gun, he was armed with his camera.

After a brief period of rest following World War II, Capa traveled far away to Southeast Asia where the French had been fighting for 8 years in the First Indochina War. Capa followed a French regiment on May 25th, 1954. At 2:55PM, the regiment passed through a dangerous area in deep forests. Capa, not watching where he was going, stepped on a landmine, ending his glorious career short.

1900'S HENLEY STYLE UNDERSHIRT...

today's post will feature one of the oldest Henley style undershirt from my collection .this early 1900's 100% Merinos wool Canadian beauty ,features an interesting collar with a concealed flap for additional warmth .this example is thought to be from around 1910 .

John Penman started his company in Paris, Ontario in 1868. The company's grew quite fast ,acquiring several mills such as, the Peninsular Knitting Company, Thorold, Ontario, the Coaticook Knitting Company, Coaticook, Quebec, and the Norfolk Knitting Company, Port Dover, Ontario.Their products included underwear, socks, blankets, and flannels. The company was incorporated as the Penman Manufacturing Company Limited in 1906 and it was at this time that John Penman relinquished control of it. Penman died in October 1931. A strike began on January 1949 at the Penman's textile plant in Paris that lasted three months hurting its business. Penman's became a subsidiary of the Dominion Textile Company of Montreal in 1965. During the following 2 decades one factory was closed after the other. By September 1987 the Dominion Textile Company sold the business to the TAG Apparel Group of Mississauga. In March 1990 the TAG Apparel Group, owner of the Penman's sportswear plant in Cambridge and the Harvey Woods underwear plants in Woodstock and London was placed in receivership because of the company's failure to pay several million dollars in loans marking the end of the Penman's saga.......

Fresh from ww2 navy seabags and the infamous RIVETED grotto, 2 pairs of black and white deck shoes . canvas deck shoes were often worn and favored by PT boats and submarines crews in the Pacific.It might by explained by their light weight, ruggedness and fast drying capacity if soak with salt water.These 2 examples are brand less,but i do think the one without cap toe was manufactured by US RUBBER CO.

Yesterday i took a little trip to pier45,here in SF. The following pictures are dedicated to the brave men of the United States Navy submarine force in World War II.

The heroic efforts of American submarines during the Pacific war is frequently overlooked and sadly understated. Military historians fully agree that the submarine campaign,ultimately helped to bring about a much swifter, and victorious conclusion to the war with Japan.

World War II submarines typically carried a crew of 70 men and 10 officers. The submarine service was a small, well trained, elite group. They represented less than two percent of all U.S. Navy personnel, and yet they were responsible for fifty-five percent of all Japanese tonnage sunk, including one third of their warships. This was not without cost, for the submarine force recorded the highest percentage of men lost in the U.S. military, 24%: more than 3500 men in 52 submarines did not return. They are said to be on eternal patrol. To this day all submariners are volunteers.USS Pampanito and her crew were successful during her 6 war patrols in the Pacific.

Nothing really surfaces while searching for info about the US NAVY's wool sweater. the "blue jacket" , Navy's bible, is kinda vague about the use and regulation of this tight fitting piece of uniform .Mostly seen underneath the blue jumper or the peacoat,it was also worn by landing parties in combination with denims and watch cap,for night time commando style ops.... pre and ww2 sweaters were made of dark blue wool, the black sweater appeared later during the 50's....

PERFECT TIME FOR AN A-2...THE PERRY CONTRACT

The A-2 is probably the more versatile jacket in existence and beside it's iconic status,it's probably why it was so widely copied .Today,as it's nice and worm enough here in good ol' SF, i've decided to wear one of my favorite A-2 jacket [so far] from Perry sportswear .I'm not going to tell you about the A-2's history, as it can be found allover the net but instead showcase some of this jacket's unique features .....

This A-2 is an original WW2 Perry Sportswear .It has a contract # without the company's name,but was easily identifiable [look at the pictures]. Perry's earlier smaller contract was mostly made using goatskin,but some were evidently done in horsehide too. Perry's design,were mostly produced in russet horsehide and seal brown model are scarce.

Perry's jacket is a very athletic and sharp one,as it's roomier at the shoulders and sleeve tops,so it fits more like a modern jacket should ...no discomfort here or need to get a bigger size.

some of Perry's unique and evident details are the stitching . The pocket's flap top stitching has a wide gap from the edge, and that stitching only goes through two layers of leather (not the folded leather edge as most other makers), and the top stitching around the zipper and collar is quite close to the edge. No triangle stitching was done at the base of the zipper. Some Perry jackets have the leather of the wind flap built in three sections, rather than just one as seen one this example. Note the pocket body stitching at the top, which is a square, rather than the more common triangle.no Perry has ever had a pocket tag .they also all have a collar stand which was avoided by most of the other manufacturer ,as difficult and time consuming to manufacture.another tell all detail is the Conmar zipper as it was the one used for almost all their production [some examples with Crown exist ]

just got this amazing book called:" CITY OF SHADOWS" by Peter Doyle and couldn't help sharing with you guys .

In the late 1980s, a vast collection of forensic crime photography, created by the New South Wales Police between 1912 and 1960, was rescued by the Historic Houses Trust from a flooded warehouse. This book draws on Peter Doyle's extensive research into these fascinating and often eerily beautiful images of everyday police investigation and crime scene recording in Sydney between 1912 and 1948. i was struck by the power of the photographs as they literally come alive on every pages.
these photos are rich in content because police photographers tried to get everything in focus, not like in professional photography. In this way, the images are strangely modern considering their lack of agenda and actually resemble the most modern European photographers or street photography. In fact, many of the mug shots taken at Sydney's police station look more like posed studio portraits than the rough mug shots we see today.

In the 1900's ,as the US industrialized intensely, factory owners hired young workers for a variety of tasks and were often hired together with their parents, especially in textile mills. Many families in mill towns depended on the children's labor to make enough money to survive it was considered as a necessity .

The National Child Labor Committee,was formed in 1904 ,it was an organization dedicated to the abolition of all child labor. By publishing information on the lives and poor working conditions of young workers,the organisation helped to mobilize popular support for child labor laws at state level.In 1908, Lewis Wickes Hine an American sociologist and photographer,was hired by the NCLC.Hine used his camera as a tool for social reform. His photographs were instrumental in changing the child labor laws in the United States. Over the next decade, Hine keep on documenting child labor in American industries to aid NCLC's lobbying efforts to end the child labor practice for good. These laws were often paired with education laws designed to keep children in school and out of the paid labor until a specified age, usually 12 to 16 years.

In Arkansas In 1914,voters passed a child welfare initiative prohibiting child labor....

In 1916,two years after , the NCLC pressured the Congress to pass the first federal child labor law. However, the US Supreme Court struck down the law two years later , declaring that the law violated a child's right to contract his or her own labor [ what industrial tycoons will do to get their way right !!?...]. In 1924, Congress attempted to pass an amendment that would authorize a national child labor law. This measure was blocked, and the bill was eventually dropped[more pressure on congress].

It took the Great Depression to end child labor nationwide; adults had become so desperate for jobs that they would work for the same wage as children. In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Fair Labor Standards Act, which, among other things, placed limits on many forms of child labor......

Here's the final product .....

I started on Cristophe's project by sketching some random faces typical of that era....

This was the choosen one...

I felt like this fellow will be a better fit for the box,as it has that good ol' "mauvais garcon" feel to it....

The finished painting before an extra layer of patina for the vintage touch....

Strangely enough, Christophe Loiron of Mr Freedom fame and i ,have never met in person ......Many times over the years his name was brought to my attention by mutual friends from the mid 80's French rockabilly/vintage scene ,as we both share the same passion, background and live now in the US.That is probably why ,when we finally hooked up via email, i felt as if we've known each other for a while and it wasn't a big stretch for me when few month ago,after cruising my art block ,Christophe asked me if i wanted to create a character that'll be featured for his up and coming "apaches" collection.After few sketches we settled for the one that is now printed on the display box .I must admit i had fun working on Christophe's project and i looking forward for more opportunities,hopefully in a near future..... http:/patrick-segui.blogspot.com

Since my former post about Dr Scholl , i've found another pair .It has been hard to date this set, as very few info surfaced from my researches on the net ,but some elements made me lean toward a late 30's early 40's date.Any additional info on the brand and model will be welcome They are new old stock and the beautiful patina,is just the result of heavy oxydation of its hide .Never polished them ,i've just dust them off......

Got it yesterday it has a beautiful light patina on its canvas but needs a little TLC and a set of buttons...more or less an hour of patient hand sewing in front of your favorite tv show ...no branding here but who cares!? leather reinforced shoulders are not that common for such a coat .Will be a better fit for a 42R,so i might let it go.If you're interested leave a comment and your email ......
