1930'S HUNTING CANVAS VEST part2

Today's post is about another hunting vest from around the same period and similar in look as the one featured earlier.

The Hinson mfg co. was founded in the 20's by a Tennessean named Clyde Shelton Hinson. It's around 1925,that Clyde moved to Waterloo Iowa where he started his manufacturing business that ,at some point, employed over 300 people .Hinson Manufacturing products ranged from your basic hunting gears,to rubber crafts and even seat belts for the automobile industry.The company seems to disappear from the charts in the late 60's ....

The tag on this vest,is the early version and can be seen on garments up to the 30's.Later ,in the 40's,it was changed to "Hinson bodyguard" and featured the Irish setter mascot. The fit is slimmer and longer than the Hettrick and has the very desirable early United.Carr fasteners for closure.

Contrary to a popular belief,this type of fastener were invented way before the 40's,in fact,1912 was when Fred S. Carr founded the Carr Fastener Company in Mass. A carriage maker by trade, he developed a concept for making fasteners to attached canvas to his carriages. They became known as "Dot" fasteners.

In 1929, the Carr Fastener Company merged with a competitor to become United-Carr and shortly thereafter the success of United-Carr was assured. 

During World War II, the plant was manufacturing mostly aircraft products and by 1945, 45 per cent of the Cambridge plant's output was for the airplane industry.....

United Carr was acquired by TRW Corporation in 1969....

1930'S HUNTING CANVAS VEST

Today's post will showcase one of my favorite hunting vest .This light weight 2 tones canvas example,dates from the 30's and features the very desirable half moon front game pockets.note the nice back with it's 2 pockets and the early fragile celluloid buttons. a plus for summer days ......

Hettrick Mfg used to advertise a lot in the 60's and into the 70's they called themselves "The World's Largest Manufacturer of Tents".The company started in Toledo Ohio,in the 1900's mostly manufacturing tents awnings and belts for farm machinery.The company later moved to North Carolina. Their "American Field" brand for hunting clothes actually dates back to 1928 when the name was actually trademarked. Even if the company was producing clothes as early as 1917 under "the Hettrick mfg" name only ,and this up to the late 30's, it's only around 1941 that "American field" starts to appear widely on clothes tags.The "Hettrick mfg" brand was then only used on canvas field gears manufactured for the war effort.Hettrick was a major player during ww2 and countless items can still be found all around the country ,web belts ,tents ,canteen covers ,you name it ......

Is copying a form a flattery !?? really !!?.... fuck that !! i was ready to launch a new run of shirts for this summer, but frankly i'm pissed and it doesn't encourage me to produced the new designs i have in store . Many thx to the "designing" team at CUSHMAN or should i say DOUCHEMAN !? Japan for their lack of imagination.

In the spring of 1972, the North Vietnamese were stalling at the peace conferences in Paris so President Richard Nixon and his military advisors concocted Operation Linebacker 2, to force the North Vietnamese to capitulate. The operation was largely carried out by the US Air Force, and US NAVY aircraft. battleships would be deployed to provide counter battery fire against enemy targets along the Ho Chi Minh Trail and other important logistical areas. Haiphong was  the North Vietnamese main port along the Gulf of Tonkin,so it was heavily defended by coastal artillery,but also by a few surface combatants. The American naval ships that participated in Operation Linebacker 2 became known as the "Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club."
